Kansas Athletics Announces Launch of Official Facebook and Twitter Pages

April 22, 2009

KU fans looking for breaking news, scores, contests, ticket information and insider updates about the Jayhawks can access the official KU Athletics Facebook and Twitter pages, launched in January and March, respectively. Fans interested in following the Jayhawks on Twitter can go to http://twitter.com/KUathletics. The official Facebook page of KU Athletics is http://www.facebook.com/KUAthletics.

Twitter is a free social networking and micro-blogging platform that allows public, informal collaboration and quick information sharing through short, 140-character messages, known as ‘Tweets’. With Twitter, KU fans receive news and exclusive updates instantly via the Twitter website, mobile phone, instant messaging (IM), Facebook or via e-mail.

Facebook is also a free social-networking website where users can interact and connect with friends in a more personal medium. In addition to an official department page, several KU teams have official Facebook fan pages, including Men’s and Women’s Basketball, Soccer, Volleyball and Football. Pages for other teams are in progress.

The NCAA determined that using social networking websites to influence the college choice of a recruit are in violation of recruiting rules. Kansas Athletics requests that fans, alumni and donors comply with all NCAA rules.

KU Fans can also receive breaking news alerts and updates on their mobile devices through the AT&T Mobile U text messaging platform, which was launched in the fall. To subscribe, text JAYHAWKS to 72645. Standard text-messaging rates apply.

Facebook, Twitter, and the text messaging platform are the foundation for many new media enhancements Kansas Athletics will provide in the coming months.
