LAWRENCE, Kan. — The University of Kansas tennis team will begin play in the 2006 Big 12 Championships on Thursday, April 27, in Waco, Texas, against the University of Colorado. The eighth-seeded Jayhawks will face the ninth-seeded Buffaloes at 6 p.m.

Kansas enters the match with an overall record of 13-10, including 4-7 in the league. Colorado ended its regular season with a mark of 10-9, and also finished 4-7 in the conference.

The two teams met earlier this season on April 15 in Boulder, with KU winning in thrilling fashion, 4-3. With CU on the verge of clinching the dual, Kansas’ Liza Avdeeva, after dropping the first set, rallied from a 5-3 deficit in the second of the No. 2 match, and then took the third to earn her team a 3-3 split in singles action. The Jayhawks then used the momentum to earn the doubles point and secured the 4-3 victory.

The two teams finished in a tie for eighth place in the Big 12 regular season standings, but because of KU’s head-to-head win, the Jayhawks earned the higher seed at the upcoming championships.

KU has put together an impressive season, with five of it wins coming against ranked foes. Also, the 13 victories in the regular season exceeded the programs win total of the last two seasons combined (11).

The winner of Thursday’s contest will meet top-seeded Baylor on Friday at 4 p.m.
