Jayhawks Have a Busy and Successful Day at Drake Relays

DES <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>MOINES, IOWA – Juniors Victoria Howard and Nickesha Anderson and seniors Crystal Manning and Ashley Brown had very extensive and very successful days at one of the most competitive track and field meets in the country on Friday. The quartet started Day Three of the 99th Annual Drake Relays by qualifying for the finals of the 400-meter relay, and then followed with the preliminaries of their individual events before capping off the day as the second-fastest 800-meter relay team in KU women’s history.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Howard was followed by Manning and Brown as Anderson finished off the second-fastest 800-meter relay in school history. The team’s time of 1:36.59 was less than a second off the Kansas standard of 1:35.98 set at the Drake Relays in 1994. Earlier at Drake Stadium, they combined to qualify for the finals of the 400-meter relay with the third fastest preliminary time (45.19) of the 28 competing teams.

Brown also qualified for the finals of the 100-meter hurdles with her time of 13.69 while Anderson had the top time of 11.48 in the prelims of the 100-meter hurdles. Also in the 100 meters, Howard just missed the finals with her ninth-place finish of 11.88.

Senior Julius Jiles was second in the preliminaries of the 110-meter hurdles with his time of 14.01. Jiles will compete at 2:40 p.m. (CST) on Saturday in the finals of the event while the women’s 100-meter dash is at 2:53 p.m. and the 100-meter hurdles at 2:30 p.m.

Kansas will have athletes competing at the final day of the Drake Relays on Saturday as well as at the Sooner Invitational in Norman, Okla. For all of the KU results log on to www.kuathletics.com.
