LAWRENCE, Kan.- –

Allie Clark went 2-for-3 with a home run and a double leading Kansas softball to a 7-3 victory over the Baylor Bears in the first game of a doubleheader. The win improved the Jayhawks overall record to 18-27, while dropping Baylor to a 35-18 record on the season.

The Allie Clark two-run home run was her team-high seventh on the season and her second homer in her last four games.

Kansas started off the game with a three-run, four-hit first inning led by Clark’s RBI-double, and a chaotic combination of stolen bases and errors leading to the final two runs of the inning.

The Jayhawks added two more runs in the bottom of the second off of a trio of singles by Dougie McCaulley, Val Chapple, and Elle Pottorf.

Baylor added a run in the top of the third inning to pull the bears within four at 5-1.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Baylor added two more runs, but the Jayhawks countered with two of their own on the Clark home run in KU’s next at bat.

Junior pitcher Sarah Vertalka notched the victory, pitching six innings and allowing only two earned runs. Senior Val George closed out the game striking out two in the final inning clinching the win over the Bears.

The teams are set to play the second game of the double-header at approximately 4:15 this afternoon.
