April 25, 2010
NORMAN, Okla. – Two Jayhawks posted their best round of the tournament and Kansas matched its best team total of the three-round event, but the KU women’s golf team finished 12th at the Big 12 Championship Sunday.
Texas A&M won the event with a Big 12 Championship record 896 total to defeat Oklahoma State by one shot. Kansas shot a 938.
KU senior Emily Powers posted the best round of the Jayhawks on the final day shooting a 76, which also marked her best round of the tournament. Her 231 total was also best among KU’s five players as she tied for 28th place. Meghna Bal shot a 77 and tied for 30th at 232.
Jennifer Clark added a 79, her best 18-hole score at the tournament, for KU’s third-best mark on Sunday. Grace Thiry added an 80 and Meghan Gockel recorded an 81. Thiry tied for 39th at 235 for the tournament, while Gockel finished 54th at 242 and Clark tied for 55th at 243.
KU’s 12th-place finish was its lowest placing at the league meet in the last eight years. In 2009 Kansas finished fifth behind Gockel’s tie for sixth place individually.
In 10 tournaments this season Kansas has finished in the top five three times, including a runner-up finish at the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate and a third-place finish at the Chip-N-Club Invitational last fall. This spring KU’s best finish was fifth at the Duramed/Rio Verde Collegiate.
