Mason Finley Named Big 12 Track and Field Male Athlete of the Week

IRVING, Texas – Kansas sophomore thrower Mason Finley was named the Big 12 Male Athlete of the Week here Tuesday. Finley, who captured first place in both the shot put and the discus at the Kansas Relays over the weekend, took home the honor for the first time during the 2011 outdoor season.

Finley recorded his best mark of the meet in the shot put competition on his final toss as he launched a throw of 19.84 meters (65-01.25 ft.) to take the crown, throwing the implement for the first time this outdoor season. His performance put him in the top spot in the NCAA in the shot put by nearly a foot.

Finley, a Salida, Colo., native, also took home a first place finish in the discus by recording a mark of 58.86 meters (193-01 ft.). Finley currently ranks fourth in the NCAA and second in the Big 12 in the discus with his season’s best mark of 198-00 ft.

Finley picked up Athlete of the Week honors for the second time this season as he also won the award during the indoor season. Additionally this is fourth career outdoor honor as he was named the Athlete of the Week twice during his freshman campaign.
