April 29, 2007

KANSAS CITY –

Kansas placed second at the 2007 Big 12 Invitational with 46 points, falling by only nine points to Texas who finished with 55 points. Kansas finished in a tie for second place last year with K-State, but were able to defeat the Wildcats by four points. K-State once again tallied 42 points. KU’s First Varsity Four victory and a narrow defeat in the First Varsity Eight race headlined a successful day in Kansas City.

The Frist Varsity Four boat, comprised of coxswain Lexie Peterson, Brooke Castrop, Hailee Jones, Abbi Huderle and Kristin Deckert, placed first with a time of 8:31.0, defeating Texas by 10.8 seconds and K-State by nearly a minute. The victory gave the Jayhawks seven points.

“Our First Varsity Eight boat finished just one length back of Texas,” said head coach Rob Catloth. “We are trying to inch up toward Texas and hopefully in two weeks we can get them at Regionals. We showed good improvement today, as we finished closer to Texas this time around and we put more distance between us and K-State.”

The Second Varsity Eight boat, consisting of Ashley Hughes, Melissa Oliver, Elisheva Patterson, Tricia Sawtelle, Ashley Broockerd, Whitney Fasbender, Megan Heacock, Annie Sims and coxswain Samira Naji, placed third with a time of 8:05.6. Texas won the race and the 14 points with a time of 7:36.4.

The First Varsity Eight boat, featuring coxswain Katie Brosious, Lindsey Miles, Jelayna Da Silva, Tiffany Jeffers, Kara Boston, Carrie Selden, Lindsey Lawrence, Valerie Jackson and LlynnAnn Laugesen, placed second in a close race. Texas defeated the Jayhawks by 3.9 seconds, while KU out-raced K-State by 14.7 seconds.

With the regular season complete, Kansas will head to Oak Ridge, Tenn. for the South-Central Regionals on May 12-13. A top finish at the South-Central Regionals would earn the team a berth in the NCAA Championships two weeks later on May 25-27 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
