Texas Tech center fielder Barrett Barnes delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning as the Red Raiders rallied for a 3-2 win over Kansas Friday night in the series opener at Dan Law Field.

The loss drops the Jayhawks to 20-22 overall and 9-10 in the Big 12, while Tech improves to 26-19 overall and 7-12 in conference play. It was the second-straight game that KU held a late lead, but could not hang on.

Thanks to a leadoff home run by senior Brandon Macias and eight solid innings by senior right-handed pitcher T.J. Walz, the Jayhawks led 2-1 heading into the bottom of the ninth. However, with Colton Murray on in relief Tech Stephen Hagen led off the inning with a solo homer to left field, which tied the game at 2-2.

It marked just the second blown save of the season for Murray.

In the 10th, Tech right fielder Andre Wheeler led off the inning with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice. After an intentional walk and a strike out, Barnes slapped a 2-0 pitch through the left side of the infield, which scored the deciding run.

Kansas jumped out to a 2-0 lead on Macias’ third home run of the season and an RBI double by Ka’iana Eldredge in the second. Macias’ round-tripper marked his second to open a game in KU’s last three contests.

Walz held the Red Raiders to one run on five hits with three walks and four strikeouts over eight innings. It was his longest start of the season.

KU could never add to its lead to put the game away, leaving eight men on base Friday night, including two in both the eighth and ninth innings.

The Jayhawks will look to even the series with Texas Tech Saturday at 5 p.m. The game can be seen live on Fox College Sports Central (Channel 141 on Lawrence’s Knology Cable).
