May 3, 2007

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Under the starry Fayetteville sky, The University of Kansas track and field teams will compete in the Arkansas Razorbacks Twilight Friday night. Head coach Stanley Redwine will bring a large contingent of Jayhawks eager for one last preparation before the Big 12 Conference Championships May 11-13 in Lincoln, Neb.

Among the KU student-athletes scheduled to compete are junior hurdlers Ashley Brown and Julius Jiles. Brown currently sits third in the Big 12 in the 100-meter hurdles with a season-best time of 13.33 seconds, one one-hundredths of a second off the school record. Jiles ran a career-best 13.89 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles at the Kansas Relays and also sits in third in the Big 12 Conference. Both marks represent regionally qualifying times for the pair.

Also scheduled to compete is a host of middle distance runners, including junior Matt Baysinger, junior Maresia Pencil and senior Clif Mitchell. All three will compete in the 800-meter run during the weekend. Baysinger currently sits 1.74 seconds off a regional mark in the event with a season-best time of 1:51.74.

Among the sprinters, sophomores Victoria Howard and Sha’Ray Butler will look to earn new regional marks in events. Howard will compete in the 100 and 200-meter dash after winning both events at last weekend’s UMKC Invitational. She already owns a regional time in the 100-meter dash after winning the Kansas Relays in a time of 11.58 seconds. Butler, who owns a regional mark in the 400-meter hurdles, will compete in the 400-meter dash, looking to finish under the regional standard of 54.61 seconds.

In field events, senior Eric Babb, who currently sits second in the Big 12 Conference and 11th in the nation with a season-best long jump of 25-02, will look to continue his momentum in the event. Pole vaulters Jordan Scott, Libby Harmon, Britany Parker and Laura Gjerde, all of whom own regional marks in the event, will also look for improvement at John McDonnell Field.
