Jayhawk Track and Field Names 28 to All-Conference Academic Teams

A total of 28 Kansas student-athletes have been named to the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 Men’s & Women’s Track & Field Teams, the league office announced Tuesday. Overall, 316 athletes were honored, with the Jayhawks ranking third behind Nebraska, which had a total 72 athletes and Colorado, who added 29 to the list.

Senior Jareb Stallbaumer was the lone Jayhawk to be nominated with a 4.0 grade point average.

Stallbaumer, a senior pre-pharmacy major from Wetmore, Kan., earned his third-straight First Team honor, while doing so with a 4.0 GPA all three years.

Twelve Jayhawk women were on the first team, led by senior Amanda Miller who earned a spot on the team for the third time in her career. Senior Elise Umbarger and juniors Rebeka Stowe and Julia Cummings were on the first team for the second time in their careers, while seniors Riley Wertenberger, Jaci Perryman and Tara Turnbull, junior Cori Christensen, sophomores Natalie Becker, Heather Bergmann, Natalie Hedberg and Kathleen Thompson all took home the honor for the first time.

On the men’s side, nine KU student-athletes earned a spot on the first team. Senior Cooper Merril is a three-time honoree, while seniors Ebo Browne and Jordan Scott, junior Nick Canton and sophomores Sean Proehl and Austin Bussing were each honored for the second time in their careers. Jayhawks earning a first team nod for the first time in their careers included sophomore Mason Finley and freshman Josh Baden.

Four Kansas women and three Jayhawk men were second-team selections. For the women, seniors Kendra Bradley and Abby Jones, sophomores Kyra Kilwein, Kathryn Lupton, and Denesha Morris were all named to the team. For the men, juniors Joel Krause and Darryl Trotter earned the honor for the first time.

Nominated by each institution’s director of student-athlete support services, the track and field academic all-league squad consisted of 267 first team members combined with 48 on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of their team’s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.

This weekend the Jayhawks travel to Norman, Okla., for the 2011 Big 12 Outdoor Track & Field Championships, taking place May 13-15 at the John Jacobs Track Complex on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.
