LAWRENCE, Kan. –
A week after concluding its regular-season schedule, the University of Kansas softball team will compete in the Big 12 Softball Championship this weekend, May 14-16, at the ASA Hall of Fame Stadium in Oklahoma City, Okla. The No. 10 seeded Jayhawks (21-33) open the tournament versus seventh-seeded Texas Tech Friday evening at 5 p.m.
Live stats and a live video feed of the contest will be available on Kansas Athletics’ official website at www.KUAthletics.com/softball. Should KU win its opening round game, Kansas will take on No. 2 seed Oklahoma Saturday morning at 11 a.m.
Kansas split a doubleheader at Drake and versus Iowa State last week to wrap up its regular season 21-33 overall and 2-16 in the Big 12. Heading into the Big 12 Championship, freshman Rosie Hull continues to lead the team with a .359 batting average, the 10th-best average in school history. However, freshman Mariah Montgomery has been the Jayhawks’ leading producer from the plate down the final stretch of the season. Montgomery led KU during conference play hitting .294 and has batted a team-best .395 over the last 14 contests. Kansas’ three-person bullpen is led by freshman Alex Jones, who owns a 3.78 ERA. She is 7-10 after picking up both of KU’s wins last week.
Scouting Texas Tech
Texas Tech lost its last three contests to go 35-15 overall, including 7-11 in the Big 12. As a team, TTU is third in the league batting .296 led by sohomore Emily Bledsoe’s .363 batting average. She has collected a team-high 53 hits and her 39 RBIs are second only to freshman Mikey Kenney’s 40. Senior Ashly Jacobs owns the conference’s fifth-best ERA at 1.91. She is 13-8 with 26 starts.
Shanon Hays is in his first year at the helm of the Red Raiders program.
Texas Tech swept its series versus Kansas earlier this season, but KU leads the all-time series 25-13. The Jayhawks also hold a 2-1 edge versus the Red Raiders during the Big 12 Softball Championship. Kansas defeated TTU in 2002 and 2004 in Oklahoma City with its lone tournament loss in 2003.
