MANHATTAN, Kan. – Sophomore right-handed pitcher Frank Duncan allowed just one run over five innings, but suffered a tough-luck loss Friday night as a trio of Kansas State pitchers blanked the Jayhawks, 2-0, in front of 1,551 fans at Tointon Family Stadium in the first game of a three-game Big 12 series.

The Jayhawks drop their third-straight and fall to 19-30 on the season and 4-14 in Big 12 play, while the Wildcats improve to 23-27 and 4-15 in conference play. K-State’s win gets them within one-half game of eighth-place Kansas as the teams chase each other for the final spot in the Big 12 Baseball Championship.

Duncan pitched five innings, allowing one run on six hits with a walk and two strikeouts, but departed after a one-hour, 31-minute rain delay during the top of the sixth. After allowing a run in the second, Duncan settled down and allowed just two base runners in his final three innings.

KU’s best chance to score came in the ninth, when trailing 2-0, junior Alex DeLeon doubled to the gap in right center and redshirt junior Jordan Dreiling singled to put runners at the corners. However, K-State relief pitcher Gerardo Esquivel recorded two strikeouts and a line out off the bat of Chris Manship to end the game. It marked the third time in the contest that KU put two men on base, but could not score.

Kansas State took an early lead in the second inning on an RBI single by Jake Brown. Brown brought home RJ Santigate, who started the inning with a hit and moved to third on a sacrifice and a soft single by Blair DeBord.

K-State added a second run in the sixth off relief pitcher Robert Kahana on an RBI single by pinch hitter Mike Kindel.

The Jayhawks were held to just five hits. K-State starting pitcher Kayvon Bahramzadeh picked up the win, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing no runs on one hit with two walks and eight strikeouts.

Kansas will look to even the series Saturday in the second game of the three-game set. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Manhattan.
