Maggie Hull Earns Prestigious Academic All-America Honors

May 24, 2012

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Junior Maggie Hull achieved one of the highest honors awarded to a student-athlete when the Kansas softball left fielder was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Third Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Hull becomes the 10th Academic All-American at Kansas and the first since 2009 when former Jayhawk Val Chapple was a two-time honoree in 2008 and 2009. This season, Hull was one of only six Big 12 players to earn the highly-acclaimed distinction.

“This is an incredible honor for Maggie,” head coach Megan Smith said. “She puts her whole self into her classwork just as she does on the field, which is why she is having the success she is having. Maggie works incredibly hard and you’re seeing the result of that. We are so proud of her and her continued impact on this program.”

A double major in journalism and Spanish, Hull posted a flawless 4.0 GPA during the Spring 2012 semester to boost her cumulative GPA to a 3.78. Aside from her unblemished work in the classroom, Hull balanced that with a record-breaking season on the diamond. She led the Big 12 Conference with a .409 batting average, the single-season best mark in Kansas softball history. Jill Larson set the previous record of .400 in 1979.

Hull led the conference with 67 hits, seventh-most in KU history, and crossed the plate 46 times, good for fourth in the Big 12. Her 46 runs tied another single-season KU record (Rose Rader, 1980). In the outfield, Hull was a constant, committing only two errors and tracking down 91 putouts in left field.

To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

The Lawrence, Kan., native adds the Academic All-America honor to her long list of 2012 accolades that include: All-Big 12 First Team, Academic All-Big 12 First Team, Captial One Academic All-America All-District First Team, NFCA All-Region and Team MVP.
