The loss drops KU’s overall record to 36-28 this season and the team will wait until Monday to learn if it will be selected for the NCAA Tournament. The 35 wins are the third most in Kansas baseball history and the most since 1994, when the team posted a 40-18 campaign.

The Jayhawks did not get off to the start they wanted in the contest, as Texas batted around to collect five hits and score four runs in the top of the first inning off KU starter Mike Zagurski.

Zagurski (8-5) lasted only 3 2/3 innings and allowed eight runs on 11 hits. The Omaha, Neb., native became KU’s single season strikeout record holder as he struck out two batters to give him 112 for the season breaking the old mark of Roger Slagle, who fanned 111 batters during the 1976 season.

Longhorn starter Randy Boone posted a career outing as tossed a three-hit complete game shutout. It was the first career complete game effort for the Texas sophomore, who struck out seven and walked four in the contest.

Texas scored one run in the second inning, three in the fourth and one in the sixth to even their record against Kansas this season to 2-2.

“Texas came out and buried us early, and Boone did a nice job of getting us out on our front foot with his change-up,” Kansas head coach Ritch Price said. “We hit four or five line-drives at their shortstop and second baseman and for that a compliment Boone. Today we weren’t quite as disciplined at the plate.”

KU Senior catcher Sean Richardson collected the only extra base hit of the day for the Jayhawks as he doubled off of Boone in the bottom of the second inning.
