Kansas Football Listed No. 31 By The Sporting News

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas football is ranked as the 31st-best football team in the country heading into the 2010 season according to The Sporting News Preseason Top 100 team released this week.

The Jayhawks are listed as the second-best team in the Big 12 North behind No. 7 Nebraska. Other Big 12 teams ahead of Kansas include No. 9 Texas, No. 10 Oklahoma and No. 30 Texas A&M.

Alabama is ranked as the preseason No. 1 team, followed by Ohio State, Boise State, Miami and Florida. TCU is sixth before Nebraska.

The Jayhawks will take the field this fall under first-year head coach Turner Gill. Kansas returns 38 letterwinners, including eight offensive and seven defensive starters from a year ago.

Among the offensive returnees are wide receivers Johnathan Wilson and Bradley McDougald, tight end Tim Biere, running back Toben Opurum and the entire starting offensive line from 2009.

2009 All-Big 12 honorees Jake Laptad (defensive end) and Drew Dudley (linebacker) join three-year starting cornerback Chris Harris to anchor the Jayhawks’ defense.

Kansas will open the 2010 season hosting North Dakota State on Sept. 4. No. 18 Georgia Tech will be in Lawrence on Sept. 11 before the Jayhawks travel to No. 57 Southern Mississippi for a Friday night game on Sept. 17.
