Kansas Baseball Ousts Coastal Carolina, 5-1, Will Play at 4 p.m.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. –

Freshman James Stanfield’s RBI ground out plated the go-ahead run in the seventh inning, while Cameron Selik and Brett Bochy combined to hold 15th-ranked Coastal Carolina to just one run in a 5-1 Jayhawk victory over the Chanticleers in an elimination game at the NCAA Baseball Regionals at Boshamer Stadium Sunday.

KU, which improved to 39-23 on the season, advances to face host North Carolina at 4 p.m. CST. The Jayhawks would need two wins over the Tar Heels to advance to the Super Regionals next weekend. Coastal Carolina is eliminated from NCAA Tournament play with a 47-16 record.

Selik went 6 2/3 innings in the game without allowing a run, before Coastal Carolina catcher Jose Iglesias tied the score with a solo shot in the seventh.

Kansas scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh as Tony Thompson, who was 4-for-5 in the game, led off the inning with a double. After a walk and a single loaded the bases, Stanfield hit a soft ground ball to short which scored Thompson from third and gave the Jayhawks a 2-1 lead.

David Narodowski then collected a two-run single with two outs to give KU a three-run advantage. Thompson added a solo homer in the bottom of the eighth for his 20th round-tripper of the season.

Bochy improved to 6-0 on the year by pitching the final 2 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts.
