Former Jayhawk Zach Ashwood Signs with Chicago Cubs

<?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>University of Kansas junior Zach Ashwood has signed with the Chicago Cubs organization. The 6-foot-4 left-handed pitcher was selected by the Cubs in the 16th round (487 overall) of this season’s first-year player draft.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>
Ashwood will begin his professional career with the Boise Hawks of the Northwest League. Boise is the Class-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs.
The 6-foot-4 lefty went 4-4 for Kansas during the 2007 season, making 12 starts and appearing in 16 games. The Colony, Texas, native posted a 5.77 ERA and 49 strikeouts in 64 innings. He was the team’s opening night starter, working five innings of KU’s 4-1 triumph at Hawaii-Hilo on Feb. 1. Ashwood spent the first two seasons of his collegiate career at TCU.
Ashwood becomes the second Kansas player to sign a professional contract after the draft. Former KU center fielder Kyle Murphy inked a deal with the Texas Rangers on Tuesday.
