Neville Sixth After Day One Of Heptathlon At 2010 USA Junior National Championships

DES MOINES, Iowa –

Kansas rising sophomore Rebecca Neville collected 3,017 points after the first day of competition in the heptathlon at the 2010 USA Junior National Track and Field Championships here Wednesday afternoon. Neville, who is one of 11 Jayhawk track and field athletes competing at Drake Stadium in either the Junior or Senior National Championships, is currently in sixth place with three events remaining.

Neville got off to a strong start by clocking in at 14.49 in the 100-meter hurdles. She had the fifth fastest time amongst the multi-event competitors and garnered 910 points for her effort.

The Merrillville, Ind., native then cleared 1.63 meters (5-04.25 ft.) in the high jump to add 771 points to her total. She then recorded a mark of 9.43 meters (30-11.25 ft.) in the shot put, which was good for 492 points.

Neville then returned to the track for her fourth and final event of the day, the 200 meters. She clocked in at 25.47, which was good for 844 points. Neville finished the day with 3,017 points, which put her in sixth place overall.

Neville will return to action Thursday as she will complete the heptathlon competition by competing in the long jump, javelin and 800 meters.

In addition to Neville, fellow rising sophomore Andrea Geubelle will participate in the junior nationals in the long jump, while rising junior Rebeka Stowe (3,000-meter Steeplechase) and rising sophomore Kyle Clemons (400 meters) will compete in the US Senior National Championships.
