Mason Finley Takes Eighth in Discus at the 2011 USA Championships

EUGENE, Ore. –

Sophomore Mason Finley placed eighth in the senior men’s discus throw here Thursday at the USA Championships in the Eugene, Ore. Finley competed against the country’s elite discus throwers for the second time in his career, also placing eighth in the event last year.

After Finley started the day with a foul, on his second attempt he hit a mark of 59.91 meters (196-06 ft.) to move up the leader board. The throw would be good enough to push him to the finals for the second-straight year. In the finals, the Salida, Colo., native fouled on two of his three attempts, but maintained his position and finished the day in eighth place.

Finley will be in action again on Sunday in the shot put. The event is set to begin at 2:55 p.m. on June 26.

Freshman Jessica Marozsek took part in the junior women’s discus throw earlier in the day. The Seymour, Wisc., native started off her day in the preliminary heat with two fouls on her first two attempts. She hit her stride on her third attempt however when she launched a throw of 47.99 meters (157-05 ft.). The throw quickly vaulted her up the leader board into second place and pushed her into the finals.

In the finals, Maroszek hit a mark of 45.45 meters (149-01 ft.) to hold steady at second place. However, she was unable to get a fair throw on her last two attempts, finishing her day in third place. Maroszek finished behind Colorado State’s Jessica Sharbono, whose best throw was just one inch longer than that of Maroszek’s. The top-two finishers in each event this week in Eugene will be invited to compete as members of Team USA at the Pan American Junior Championships, July 22-24, in Miramar, Fla.

Several more Jayhawks will be competing at the USA Championships this week. On Friday, Jessica Maroszek will be again be in action as she takes part in the junior women’s shot put. Diamond Dixon will also be seeing action in the junior level has she runs in the first round of the women’s 400 meters. Other Jayhawks competing will be Andrea Geubelle in the women’s triple jump, Rebeka Stowe in the women’s 3,000-meter Steeplechase, and Dalen Fink in the men’s junior 800 meters.
