Kansas Athletics Honors Retiree Hazlett

June 27, 2008

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Kansas Athletics honored football secretary Marge Hazlett on June 26, who retired after 40 ½ years of service and dedication to the department.

Hazlett served under 10 head football coaches: Pepper Rodgers, Don Fambrough (twice), Bud Moore, Mike Goffried, Bob Vallesente, Glen Mason, Terry Allen, Tom Hayes and Mark Mangino.

During her four decades with the Jayhawks, Hazlett was a part of nine different Kansas football teams that made bowl appearances. Those bowls included the 1969 Orange Bowl, 1973 Liberty Bowl, 1975 Sun Bowl, 1981 Hall of Fame Bowl, 1992 Aloha Bowl, 1995 Aloha Bowl, 2003 Mazda Tangerine Bowl, 2005 Fort Worth Bowl and 2008 FedEx Orange Bowl.

Of the hundreds of players she has worked with throughout the years, Hazlett has been loved by them all.

“Marge Hazlett always had the ability to make you feel comfortable and at home. Being a student-athlete, away from home in Southern California caused me to have my fair share of homesickness. But anytime I stepped into the offices of the football coaching staff, Marge always had a warm smile and words of encouragement to lift up my spirits. Not only did she provide support to the coaching staffs over the years, but she also supported us football players with her warmth and caring,” said Dino Bell, a tailback for the Jayhawks in 1981-82 and 1984 who now serves as the Director of Initial and Continuing Eligibility for the Kansas Athletics Compliance Office.
