Approximately 50 golfers participated in the golf tournament which kicked off Thursday evening with a reception and silent auction.

The National Championship Classic is hosted by the Mario V. Chalmers Foundation (MVC Foundation). The mission of the Mario V. Chalmers Foundation is to create and support community based programs that encourage the positive development of youth through sports and education and fund initiatives for breast cancer research and treatment.

From its website, the MVC Foundation will strive to empower, inspire and enable youth to live healthy lifestyles, pursue education first and give back to their communities. Each activity supported by the MVC Foundation will encourage youth to stay positive, and remind them that in times of adversity.

The visit was Chalmers’ first to Lawrence since the Miami Heat guard won the NBA title in June. By winning the 2012 NBA title Chalmers, the Most Outstanding Player of the 2008 KU NCAA championship squad, became only the second player in Kansas history to win both a NCAA and a NBA title. He joined Clyde Lovellette who won the 1952 NCAA National Championship and multiple NBA titles with the Minneapolis Lakers (1954) and Boston Celtics (1963, 1964).
