July 22, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas Volleyball set the standard among the 10 KU teams that achieved grade-point averages of 3.0 or higher during the Spring 2011 semester, as the team posted a department-best 3.35 team GPA.

During the 2010-11 school year, 15 Jayhawk volleyball players were named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Honor Roll. Additionally, they make up part of the 261 student-athletes – 54 percent of all student-athletes on active rosters – that earned spots on the Athletics Directors’ Honor Roll with grade-point averages of 3.0 or better; 32 of those achieved perfect 4.0 GPA’s.

With the volleyball team’s 3.35 mark leading the way, KU’s student-athletes combined for a 2.98 GPA for the year. Tennis came in at a close second with a 3.33. Eight other sports registered GPA’s of 3.0 or better: men’s golf (3.28), women’s golf (3.25), soccer (3.24), rowing (3.18), swimming and diving (3.15), the spirit squad (3.13), men’s track and field (3.08) and softball (3.04).

“Our congratulations go to the student-athletes, to the terrific Kansas faculty and to the academic-support staff at Kansas Athletics,” said KU Athletics Director Sheahon Zenger. “These marks are difficult to achieve when you factor in the time these student-athletes spend on their sports, in the community and their other obligations.”
