Four Jayhawks Advance to Second Round at 99th Kansas Amateur

MISSION HILLS, Kan. –

Four Jayhawk golfers, including current players Patrick Roth and Nate Barbee, advanced to the second round of match play Thursday at the 99th Kansas Amateur at Kansas City Country Club.

Junior Nate Barbee edged Jack Courington of Wichita, Kan. in 19 holes after Courington bogeyed the first extra hole. Barbee led the 2008-09 Kansas men’s golf team in scoring average with a 73.12 stroke average and five top-20 finishes. Barbee will meet number-two seeded Dean Merrill in the second round of match play Friday morning.

Senior Patrick Roth edged out Eric Mode in the first round by a score of 2&1. Roth finished runner-up at the 2008 Kansas Amateur at Wichita Country Club.

Recent graduate Andrew Storm beat Zac Potter one-up after taking the lead on the 17th hole when Potter bogeyed. Storm carded four birdies on his round Thursday.

Former Jayhawk Conrad Roberts fired four birdies on his round to edge out Jackson Foth 3&1. Roberts played for the Jayhawks from 1999-2000 and competed on two teams that competed in the NCAA Championship.

Former Jayhawk Zach Pederson lost to his bid to advance to the second round when he dropped his match with Aaron Mapel in 19 holes. Kansas head coach Kit Grove also dropped his opening-round match 2&1 to Mark Elliott.

Sophomore Blake Giroux dropped his match to Jon Troutman by a score of 4&3.

Both the round of the 32 and round of 16 matches will be conducted on Friday.
