2012-13 Printable Schedule

LAWRENCE, Kan. – More than two-thirds of Kansas women’s basketball games in 2012-13 will be against teams which made a postseason appearance last year, including defending national champion Baylor. In all, the Jayhawks will play 21 contests versus teams that advanced to the postseason a year ago.

Kansas, which finished 21-13 in 2011-12 and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament for the third time in program history, will play 15 of its 27 games in historic Allen Fieldhouse beginning with the Jayhawks’ season-opener versus Idaho State on Sunday, Nov. 11.

KU’s non-conference home slate is highlighted by matchups with four schools from BCS conferences and three road games against schools that were NCAA tournament teams a year ago; Creighton (Nov. 25), Arkansas (Dec. 6) and California (Dec. 21).

“We start a really tough non-conference stretch at home against Wake Forest followed by Creighton on the road, which is always a tough place to play,” said ninth year head coach Bonnie Henrickson. “Then you go back-to-back with Minnesota from the Big Ten and a tough SEC school in Arkansas. The following week we go to California and face a team that will probably be in the top 25 so all these game will give us a great opportunity to learn about ourselves on the road and a great opportunity to get Carolyn (Davis) back in the mix early in the season.”

Kansas will open its always challenging conference schedule right after the New Year. League play begins on Jan. 2 for the Jayhawks as they take on in-state rival Kansas State in Lawrence. The Jayhawks will then make their first trip in over twenty years to Morgantown, W.Va., for a matchup with new conference foe West Virginia.

“We’re adding West Virginia who is always really good,” continued Henrickson. “They’re physical and have great athletes. And add TCU, who we played a few years ago and have a really good coaching staff. They’re two good teams which make our league better and I think they bring a lot to the table.”

For the second-straight season the Big 12 schedule will feature a double round-robin format in which the Jayhawks will face each conference opponent twice. Kansas will be tested from the start with a four-game stretch against a collection of the league’s top teams including a Jan. 12 date with the defending national champion Baylor Bears.

“We start conference out really tough with K-State at home and then West Virginia and Oklahoma State back-to-back which will be tough turnaround travel-wise,” said Henrickson. “It will be against two really good teams. Then we get rewarded for getting through that difficult stretch by coming home to play Baylor, but that’s what you should expect from Big 12 play.”

The format has been adjusted for the 2013 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship as it will be played the weekend before the men’s championship, and in a different city for the first time in Conference history. Dallas’ American Airlines Center will host the women’s championship Friday-Monday, March 8-11, 2013.

“There’s a bigger break now between the conference tournament and the NCAA tournament,” Henrickson explained of the changes made to this year’s Big 12 tournament. “If you’re on a run you don’t want that gap, but if you’re a little dinged up then that is a beneficial break. I don’t have feelings either way but we’ll handle it and manage the change once we get to that point in the season. I know Dallas is really excited to get the tournament and having it inside an NBA arena will get the coaches and players excited.”

KU will tip-off the 2012-13 season with a pair of exhibition games in Allen Fieldhouse versus Washburn (Oct. 28) and Fort Hays State (Nov. 4).

The Jayhawks return four starters from last year’s squad, including All-Big 12 selections Carolyn Davis and Angel Goodrich. In all, KU brings back nine letterwinners and four of its top five scoring threats from 2011-12, including senior Monica Engelman and sophomore Natalie Knight in addition to Davis and Goodrich.

Official start times and a television broadcast schedule will be released closer to the start of the 2012-13 season.
