Aug. 16, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

Senior Shannon McCabe and freshman Whitney Berry tallied goals, while sophomore Emily Cressy added an assist as the Blue Team scored a 2-0 exhibition victory over the Crimson Team in the Jayhawks’ intrasquad match Sunday at Anschutz Pavilion.

The contest was moved indoors due to heavy rains in the early hours Sunday morning, however it was competitive throughout the entire 90 minutes.

McCabe gave the Blue Team an early lead with a break-away goal in the first half. In the 20th minute, the senior forward took a feed from Cressy on the far side of the net and chipped a shot over the keeper. McCabe tied for the team-lead in goals last season.

Early in the second half, Blue struck again as freshman midfielder Berry fired a shot from 30 yards out into the upper third. Berry, a freshman from Wichita, Kan., set a Goddard High School record with 166 goals during her high school career.

Senior Monica Dolinsky led the offensive effort for Blue with six shots, while McCabe and Cressy each fired three. Junior Kaitlyn Cunningham paced the Crimson Team with a pair of chances, including the first shot of the contest.

In all, 26 of the squad’s 28 student-athletes participated in the scrimmage, including all three goalkeepers. Freshman Logan Reed made three saves to lead the way, while senior Julie Hanley and redshirt freshman Kat Liebetrau combined for three saves.

The Jayhawks will kick off the 2009 season on Sunday, Aug. 23 with a 1 p.m. match at Drake. KU’s first home contest will be Sept. 4 against Long Beach State at 5 p.m.
