Men's Golf Ties For Fifth At Big 12

April 27, 2004

The No. 24 University of Kansas men’s golf team shot a three-round total of 893 and finished in a three-team-tie for fifth place in the Big 12 Conference Championship, Tuesday, at the 6,598 yard, par 70 Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.

“We didn’t play very well in today’s round,” head coach Ross Randall said. “We just weren’t clicking like we would want in a tournament like this. It was disappointing for us because we didn’t compete as well as we would have liked.”

The Jayhawks, who tied with Colorado and Texas Tech, finished 29 strokes behind the team champion, seventh-ranked Texas, which shot a three-round total of 864 to win its third-straight conference crown. Oklahoma took second (870) and third place went to eighth-ranked Oklahoma State with a three-round 873. Kansas also picked up three points in the Border War rivalry by finishing 27 strokes ahead of Missouri, which finished in 11th place.

Senior Tyler Hall (Wayne, N.J.), junior Kevin Ward (Leawood, Kan.) and freshman Tyler Docking (Olathe, Kan.) each finished tied for 20th with identical three-round totals of 224. Hall shot a 74 in his final round, Ward carded a 73 and Docking finished with a 76 in his round today. Junior Andrew Price (Lake Forest, Ill.) carded a 78 in his final round and finished the tournament tied for 29th with a 225 total. Freshman Gary Woodland (Berryton, Kan.) finished tied for 42nd after he carded a 78 in his final round for a 229 three-round total.

“We have work to do and some time to get it done before regionals,” Randall said. “We want to play better during regionals, closer to our team’s potential.”

Kansas is now expecting an at-large berth in the NCAA Central Regional to be held at Birck Boilermaker Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind., May 20-22.
