April 3, 2004

LAWRENCE, Kan. – The University of Kansas rowing team improved its times by winning five of seven races against Tulsa and Drake on Saturday at the Kansas River. The ‘Hawks started the day off with a 6:09.6 time in the 1st Varsity 8 race and continued their success throughout the day. In addition to the 1st Varsity 8 win, the team notched victories in the Varsity 4, Novice 4, 2nd Varsity 8 and the 1st Novice 8 races. Tulsa earned two victories on the day in the other Varsity 4 and Novice 4 races.

The Jayhawks 1st Novice 8 boat continued their strong spring season earning a 35-second victory over Tulsa, with a time of 6:18.8. In Varsity 4 competition, Kansas won the first race by seven seconds over Drake, but lost the second Varsity 4 race to Tulsa by four seconds. In the closest race of the day, Tulsa edged the ‘Hawks by just one second in a highly competitive Novice 4 race.

“I was really pleased with our performance today,” head coach Rob Catloth said. “We had a lot of good practices this week and we raced really hard. We made a lot of improvement over last week and that was due to the fact that we had more time to prepare this week. Every week we are hoping to get better and I think we did that today.”

The ‘Hawks next competition is a home regatta on April 10 against Kansas State and Cincinnati.
