Aug. 24, 2004

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas men’s basketball player Jeff Hawkins will not prepare or play in the upcoming trip to Vancouver to address some team issues that demand immediate attention, head coach Bill Self said Monday.

“Although the leave is indefinite, we hope to have Jeff back on the team if these issues are addressed properly,” Self said of the junior-to-be.

Hawkins averaged 8.9 minutes in 31 games last season for KU. The Kansas City, Kan., guard averaged 1.7 points and recorded a career-high 19 points in a victory at TCU last year.

KU started practices August 19 for its upcoming Canada trip Sept. 4-6. The Jayhawks will face four teams over a three-day span in and around Vancouver on their preseason swing. The trip will begin Sept. 4 as KU takes on the University of British Columbia at 2 p.m. (Central). The following day KU will play Langara College at 1 p.m. and University College of the Fraser Valley All-Stars at 9 p.m. The tour will conclude Sept. 6 against the Burnaby Mountain All-Stars at 12:30 p.m.
