Jayhawk Baseball Announces 2006 Schedule

The University of Kansas announced its 2006 baseball schedule on Monday. Head coach Ritch Price is looking to lead the Jayhawk program to an unprecedented fourth 30-plus win season with a schedule that consists of 10 teams that made the 2005 NCAA Tournament.

“Our program has continued to make progress and this is our most challenging schedule and it might be the toughest schedule in the Big 12,” commented Price. “We are trying to improve and get into the first five in the Big 12 so we can make the NCAA Tournament.”

For the fourth consecutive year, Kansas will travel to Hawaii to open its season. KU will play Hawaii-Hilo three times (Feb. 1-3) in Hilo and a doubleheader in Kona on Feb. 4. Following its trip to Hawaii, the Jayhawks will travel to Palo Alto, Calif., on Feb. 10, for a weekend series against the Stanford Cardinal for a third straight season.

The following week, KU will return to the west coast, to compete in the Public Storage Classic (Feb. 17-19), an annual tournament hosted but Southern Cal in Los Angeles, Calif. Besides playing the Trojans, the Jayhawks will meet San Diego and Vanderbilt.

Kansas will conclude February with a trip to Nashville, Tenn., for the Music City Challenge (Feb. 24-26). KU will play Belmont, Lipscomb followed by host Vanderbilt.

KU’s first home game at Hoglund Ballpark will be against the Leathernecks of Western Illinois on March 3. After their first mid-week contest against Baker on March 8, the Jayhawks begin a tough 10-game road trip with games against four NCAA Tournament teams.

Kansas will travel to the state of South Carolina to face perennial ACC power Clemson March 10-12. The Jayhawks open the Big 12 season in Waco, Texas, against Baylor, March 17-19. After a mid-week tussle against Creighton in Omaha, Neb., March 22, KU will return to Nebraska to face the Cornhuskers at Haymarket Park, March 24-26.

Kansas returns home to face Wichita State in the first of two meetings against the Shockers on March 29. The Border Showdown against Missouri will take play at Hoglund Ballpark, March 31 through April 2.

The Jayhawks will host the first game of their three-game set against Kansas State on April 21 before the series resumes in Manhattan the next two days. After a trip to Austin, Texas, to face the 2005 Nation Champion, Texas Longhorns, KU will return home for a mid-week game against Missouri State.

KU will take a weekend off of Big 12 play May 12-14 to host the Jayhawk Classic. Kansas will face Bradley once and Northern Colorado twice in the three-team tournament.

After concluding its Big 12 schedule with a home series against the Aggies of Texas A&M (May 19-21), the Jayhawks will look for a return trip to the Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship held at Bricktown Ballpark in Oklahoma City, Okla. The tournament begins on May 24 and concludes on Sunday, May 28.
