Cauzillo Named Big 12 Soccer Newcomer of the Week

Sept. 7, 2004

LAWRENCE, Kan. – For the second consecutive week a Kansas soccer player has been recognized by the Big 12 Conference for her outstanding play. Sophomore midfielder Nicole Cauzillo was named Big 12 Newcomer of the Week on Tuesday following her strong performance at the KUStore.com Crimson & Blue Invitational over the weekend.

Cauzillo, who played her freshman season at the University of West Virginia, joined the Jayhawks this fall and has started all four games. The Northville, Mich., native currently leads the team with two goals and five points. During last weekend’s tournament, Cauzillo was the leading force behind the Kansas offense as she registered the game-winning tally in both games the Jayhawks played en route to the tournament crown.

In Friday’s match-up with Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Cauzillo celebrated her 19th birthday by scoring KU’s only goal in the game to lift the Jayhawks to a 1-0 victory. Cauzillo was not finished, however, as she also plotted the game-winner against St. Louis on Sunday’s tournament finale. Following the conclusion of the tournament, Cauzillo was selected by the coaches as the tournament’s offensive MVP.

The No. 21 Jayhawks will be in action in Greenville, S.C., this weekend as they participate in the Furman Select Kickoff Classic. Kansas will face tournament host Furman at 6 p.m. on Thursday and battle No. 7 Clemson at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
