Nate Barbee led the Jayhawks to a tied for third place finish after day one with a first-round 70 at the rain shortened Fairway Club Invitational at ArborLinks Golf Course (Par-72. 7158 yards) in Nebraska City, Neb. The event has been shortened to 36-holes after heavy rains washed out one of two rounds scheduled for Monday.

The Jayhawks opened with a first-round 294 and trail the clubhouse leader, Western Illinois, by just four strokes entering into the final round of play.

“I thought a score of 300 would be a solid round today with the weather so I am very pleased with our score of 294,” said head coach Kit Grove. “Nate played a very solid round for us today which is becoming commonplace for him.”

Barbee’s front-nine score of 32 propelled him to his fifth career under-par round. Senior Walt Koelbel joins Barbee in the top-10 with an opening-round 73.

Freshman Ian Anson opened his Jayhawk career with a first-round 75 and is currently tied for 19th place. Senior Andrew Storm shot a 76 and is tied for 30th place. Freshman Blake Giroux shot a 78 in his Jayhawk debut and is tied for 42nd place. Junior Patrick Roth, who is competing in the event as an individual, shot an 80 and is tied for 50th place.

Western Illinois leads the event by two strokes over South Dakota State with Kansas and Northern Illinois trailing by four strokes. Shane Pearce of Texas Pan-American sits atop the individual leaderboard with an opening-round 68.

The final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. CST. Check back to kuathletics.com for a complete recap and results of the final round of play upon the conclusion of the event.
