Three Jayhawks notched 10 kills as the University of Kansas volleyball team swept Temple, 30-23, 30-22 and 30-23, Saturday afternoon at the Horejsi Family Athletics Center to win the 2005 Pizza Hut Jayhawk Invitational. Senior Josi Lima, who had 12 digs and 10 kills in the match, was named tournament MVP. Junior Jana Correa (10 kills, eight digs, four aces) and senior Paula Caten (11 digs, 10 kills) each earned all-tournament honors for their efforts.

Senior Andi Rozum ran the offense with 43 assists and junior Jamie Mathewson was solid with a match-best 14 digs on defense. Sophomore Emily Brown rounded out the top scorers with eight digs and seven kills in the win.

The Kansas offense totaled nine services aces while the defense held Temple to just a .088 attack percentage.

Senior Zhen Jia Liu led the Owls with 11 kills and added 10 digs in the effort. Junior Linsey Morningstar, a Lawrence native and Free State High graduate, dished a team-best 16 assists for Temple.

“Today’s effort was effective and productive,” head coach Ray Bechard said. “We served the ball well and had 62 digs, over 20 a game, which is a really good stat. It was the cap to a pretty successful non-conference slate of our season at 8-1 and now we only have 20 tough matches left — all Big 12.”

KU continues its six-match home stand and opens Big 12 Conference play at 7 p.m. Wednesday when it hosts No. 13 Texas A&M in Lawrence.
