Jayhawks Fall Ball Report #1

LAWRENCE, Kan. –

The Kansas baseball team completed its first weekend of Fall Ball intrasquad games this past weekend at Hoglund Ballpark. The team has been divided into two teams, <?xml:namespace prefix=”st1″ ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags”?>Kansas and the Jayhawks. The teams played to a 6-6 tie on Saturday, while the Jayhawks claimed a 6-1 triumph on Sunday.<?xml:namespace prefix=”o” ns=”urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office”?>

Freshman Tony Thompson was the offensive star of Saturday’s contest, going 3-for-4 with a home run. Senior Joe Southers and freshman Casey Lytle each collected a pair of hits.

On the mound, redshirt-freshman Brett Bochy worked 1 2/3 innings of hitless relief, collecting three strikeouts. Junior Matt Lane also had a strong outing, allowing just one hit in two innings of work.

Pitching was the difference in Sunday’s games as sophomore Wally Marciel worked three innings of scoreless relief and junior Paul Smyth allowed just one run over the final 2 1/3 innings.

Sophomore Robby Price and senior John Allman led the Jayhawks with two hits each on Sunday, while junior Buck Afenir went 2-for-2 with a solo home run for Kansas.

KU will continue with its Fall Ball schedule this weekend with two more intrasquad games at Hoglund Ballpark.
