KU Ranked No. 24 in USA TODAY/CSTV Coaches' Poll

Sept. 13, 2004

Lawrence, Kan. – For the first time in school history, the Kansas volleyball team has made its way into the national rankings. The Jayhawks (7-0, 0-0 Big 12) were ranked 24th in the USA TODAY/CSTV Coaches’ Poll, as released by the American Volleyball Coaches’ Association on Sept. 13. It is KU’s first national ranking since the poll began in 1982.

KU will look to remain unbeaten as it travels across the state line Tuesday for a match at UMKC. The Jayhawks and Kangaroos (2-4, 0-0 Mid-Continent) will face off at 7 p.m. at the Swinney Recreation Center in Kansas City, Mo.

Live stats via Gametracker and immediate match results will be available on kuathletics.com.

The Jayhawks are coming off a 3-0 weekend in the Holiday Inn/Jayhawk Classic that included a 3-1 win over No. 25 Wisconsin. KU claimed its own tournament crown while Josi Lima was named MVP and Andi Rozum and Ashley Michaels earned all-classic team honors.

UMKC is fresh off two wins at the SIU Saluki Invitational last week. The Kangaroos defeated Southern Illinois 3-2 in the first match and Eastern Illinois 3-1 in the nightcap Saturday to bring home the tournament title. Angela Melka was named MVP and teammates Kristy Waltemeyer and Vanessa Portela joined her on the all-tournament team.

Kansas will begin Big 12 Conference play Friday at No. 12 Texas A&M (4-2, 0-0 Big 12).
