Tennis Set to Begin Season at Hurricane Invitational

Sept. 14, 2005

Notes

LAWRENCE, Kan.– The University of Kansas tennis team will kick off its 2005 fall campaign as it travels to Tulsa, Okla., for the Hurricane Invitational, hosted by the University of Tulsa. The three day event is set to begin Friday, Sept. 16 and run through Sunday, Sept. 18.

This year’s tournament boasts a very strong field, including Oklahoma and Tulsa, which were ranked in the final 2005 ITA Rankings. The Jayhawks will compete against Big 12 opponent Oklahoma State and in-state rival Wichita State with Missouri State rounding out the six-team invitational.

Kansas enters the season optimistic as it returns the majority of last year’s squad. Joining returning players Christine Skoda, Brittany Brown, Ashley Filberth, Elizaveta Avdeeva, Lauren Hommell and Stephanie Smith on this year’s roster are freshmen Ksenia Bukina and Edina Horvath, who are expected to contribute early.

Head coach Amy Hall-Holt is excited to get the season underway. “This is a great tournament to start the year with,” Hall-Holt said. “Our girls put in a lot of time and effort over the summer, and now it’s time to make all of the hard work pay off.”

The Jayhawks will compete in three more tournaments to round out their fall schedule before beginning spring match play on Jan. 22 against Ball State.
