Jayhawks Enter Final Round at Fairway Club Invitational in Third Place

Sept. 14, 2009

NEBRASKA CITY, Neb. –

Three returning members of the Kansas men’s golf team helped guide the Jayhawks to a third-place finish after the first two rounds at the Fairway Club Invitational at Arbor Links Golf Course.

Seniors Bryan Hackenberg and Patrick Roth, along with junior Nate Barbee, will enter the final round of play in the top-10 amongst individuals.

“I am very excited with the way we played today and were able to score well in perfect conditions on a great golf course,” said head coach Kit Grove. “We were able to shoot even-par as a team this morning and I think that is the first time we have done that since I have been the coach.”

Hackenberg shot a pair of rounds under par to shoot a first-day total of 141 and is tied for fourth place. Barbee also is tied for fourth place after firing a 69 in the second round.

“Nate (Barbee) didn’t putt as well as he is capable of putting in the first 27 holes, but he was still able to have a very solid day because he is striking the ball so well right now,” said Grove.

Roth carded rounds of 71 and 73 to tie for seventh entering the final day of play.

Freshmen Chris Gilbert and Alex Gutesha both fired rounds of par or better in the first rounds of their collegiate careers. Gilbert followed up his opening round 72 with a 74 and is tied for 17th place. Gutesha is tied for 26th place after carding rounds of 71 and 77.

Sophomores Ian Anson and Blake Giroux are competing in the event as individuals. Anson shot a 151 during the two rounds today and is tied for 39th. Giroux is tied for 61st with 159 strokes.

Kansas is trailing the leader Drake by nine strokes entering the final round. Ben Freeman of Drake is leading the event with 134 strokes after two rounds of play.

The final round of play will begin with a shotgun at 8:30 a.m. CST. Check back to kuathletics.com for a complete recap and results from the final round at the Fairway Club Invitational.
