Nate Barbee carded an even-par 72 to finish in fifth place and lead the Kansas men’s golf team to a third place finish at the Fairway Club Invitational at Arbor Links Golf Course.

Barbee is joined in the top-10 by senior Bryan Hackenberg and freshman Alex Gutesha. The finish marks Barbee’s sixth top-10 finish of his career and a first for both Hackenberg and Gutesha.

“This is the most consistant effort we have had as a team since I have been here,” said head coach Kit Grove. “Nate (Barbee) was our rock again this week and I thought our freshman played excellent and so did the veteran guys.”

Hackenberg shot a 75 to finish tied for eighth and Gutesha shot a three-under, 69, to move up 16 spots on the leaderboard to finish tied for 10th.

Freshman Chris Gilbert shot his second even-par round of the event with a final round 72 and finished tied for 14th. Senior Patrick Roth fired a 75 to finish tied for 20th.

Sophomores Ian Anson and Blake Giroux competed in the event as individuals. Anson shot a 233 over the three rounds to finish tied for 53rd. Giroux ended with 238 strokes and tied for 63rd.

The team shot a 288 in the final round, tying UMKC for the low round of the day. Drake, led by medalist Cody Schweinefeus, won the event by three strokes over host school, Nebraska. The finish marks the second straight year the Jayhawks have opened the season with a third-place finish at the Fairway Club Invitational.

The Jayhawks return to action Sept. 21-22 when they travel to Manhattan, Kan. to compete in the Jim Colbert Intercollegiate at Colbert Hills Golf Club. Check back to kuathletics.com for complete coverage of the 2009-10 men’s golf season.
