Kansas Wins Third Straight Kansas Invitational, Woodland Wins Individual Crown

The Kansas men’s golf team won the 2006 Kansas Invitational marking its third straight title at the event held at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan. The Jayhawks concluded the tournament with their third consecutive team score of par or better with a third round team total of 288 and a tournament total of 862.
Senior Gary Woodland wrapped up an impressive nine-under three round total of 207 shots to claim the Individual Championship. Woodland fired a final round score of 72 to hold off strong final round efforts by Jordan Irwin of Houston and Matt Miller of Illinois State who finished the tournament in second and third place, respectively.
“I am very pleased with the way we played today with another day of tough course conditions,” said Coach Ross Randall. “Gary Woodland played very well and really dominated the tournament. Tyler Docking turned in another strong round and Barrett Martens really bounced back well today with an impressive round. We are very pleased with the victory and to win by such a large margin is impressive.”
The victory was a team effort with several strong performances by the Jayhawks. Senior Tyler Docking continued his strong start to his senior campaign with a three-round total of 216 and a tie for 4th. Sophomore Zach Pederson shot a final-round score of 73 to climb into a tie for 23rd. Freshman Bobby Knowles finished in 23rd place after shooting a three-day total of 223. Senior Barrett Martens shot the best round of the day for the Jayhawks with a one-under 71 valuting him into a tie for 55th after a tournament score of 233 strokes.
The Jayhawks had three members of the team compete in the tournament as individuals. Freshman Patrick Roth finished his first career tournament with a final-round score of 78 to finish in a tie for 24th. Sophomore Walt Koebel shot a 79 on Tuesday and finished the tournament with a score of 239, tying for 78th. David Cosel shot a three-round score of 239 after shooting an 82 Tuesday and he also finished in a tie for 78th.
The Jayhawks were chased in the team standings by Big 12 rivals Iowa State and Nebraska who tied for second place after firing three-round team totals of 882, respectively. Houston and Illinois State rounded out the top five in the tournament.
The Jayhawks will next be in action on Oct. 8-9 when they travel to Glencoe, Ill. to compete in the Windon Memorial Classic.
