Postgame Quotes

Kansas 30, Texas Tech 31

Sept. 25, 2004 – Memorial Stadium – Lawrence, KS

Kansas Head Coach Mark Mangino

ON THE GAME:

“It was a hard fought game that we just didn’t close out. We weren’t able to finish the game two weeks in a row now and we need to find out why this keeps happening. We did good in some areas but there was just not enough consistency in our offense to be a good football team. I’m not pleased with the offensive line. I didn’t think we managed the game well on offense, but everything is correctible. I want to commend John Randle and Clark Green for their efforts today because any yards that they got were pretty much based on their own effort.”

ON THE DEFENSE:

“The defense was fantastic today. They gave us every opportunity to win the game. The guys up front played well. In the secondary we had guys put in one on one situations and they played well. As a unit we’re playing very well.”

Kansas sophomore Safety Rodney Harris

ON THE GAME:

“We just didn’t execute in the second half. We didn’t come out to play and Texas Tech did. They came out and took advantage of everything. That’s what happens when you don’t execute, you lose.”

ON THE INTERCEPTION:

“They ran a slant and the receiver tipped it. The ball was just there and I just tried to take it as far as I could.”

Kansas sophomore Running Back John Randle

ON THE GAME:

“In the second half, we just couldn’t finish the game. I just know that we have to bear down and play hard. I thought we were going to win. We just have to play hard through the whole game. We just tried to stay poised and go out and make plays.

Kansas sophomore Quarterback Adam Barmann

ON BOUNCING BACK:

“We just have to take it one week at a time. We are going to play each game for each game. We are going to execute our offense and do what we do”

ON THE OFFENSE:

“We put 30 points on the board and, obviously, we were doing the things we needed to do. You can’t go out and score 30 one half and zero the next half and be satisfied. A lot of the blame has to be put on us (the offense). We take the blame.”

Texas Tech Head Coach Mike Leach

ON KANSAS’ PLAY:

“He (Coach Mangino) has done a great job here and I have the utmost respect for his team and their game plan today. I was really happy and we were real fortunate to come out with a win, but the coaching staff is really doing a great job. I think Kansas deserves some credit as far as their level of play.”

ON THE GAME:

“I don’t know if there was a real turning point in the game. We were down the whole game. I guess the only shift in the momentum came when Taurean (Henderson) scored the touchdown. That being said, it’s a good win. I think we need to play a little more evenly. I didn’t see what I wanted to see as far as us playing together on all three sides of the ball. I am really proud of our guys, that they were able to stay in it and finishing the way they did.”

ON TECH’S TOUCHDOWN AT THE END OF THE FIRST HALF:

“I think it really helped our momentum in the second half. We felt like we should have played better in the first half and we are really happy with the way we played in the second half. We really turned our mentality around in the second half. We were still sloppy at times but I was happy with how we stuck with it.”

Texas Tech junior Runningback Taurean Henderson

ON THE GAME WINNING TOUCHDOWN:

“The whole time I was thinking about scoring. Every time I touch the ball I think I’m going to take it to the house. I was actually surprised about the call.” ON THE RUNNING GAME: “We view it as a whole team effort with everyone contributing to the game. We started running the ball more this week. You have to get in a groove on offense.”

Texas Tech senior Quarterback Sonny Cumbie

ON THE GAME:

“With the explosiveness of our offense, we always feel like we are in the game. It’s the confidence we have in our team. In the second half, I finally started hitting my receivers. The guys up front really established their dominance. Chad Johnson’s interception really gave us momentum. Overcoming two scores for us isn’t much.”
