Tennis Finishes Strong At Hurricane Invitational

Tulsa, Okla. – The University of Kansas tennis team went 4-1 in singles competition on Sunday to cap off a strong opening weekend to the team’s fall season of play at the Hurricane Invitational in Tulsa, Okla.

Freshman Lauren Hommell continued her weekend domination with a straight-set victory over Wichita State’s Alejandra Ropoll, 6-1, 6-0. The victory gave Hommell a 3-0 record in singles matches for the weekend. Fellow freshman Stephanie Smith also enjoyed a successful Kansas tennis debut as she notched a 3-0 record with her Sunday victory over WSU’s Genevieve Spink, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Kansas’s other two victories came from junior Luiza Loureiro and sophomore Ashley Filberth. Loureiro recorded a 6-0, 6-3 victory over WSU’s Jackie Richey, while Filberth downed Wendi Webster of Wichita State, 6-4, 6-4.

The Jayhawks will be back in action Oct. 15-17 at the Notre Dame Invitational in South Bend, Ind.
