Six Kansas Swimmers Receive Academic All-American Honors

Sept. 26, 2007

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Senior Lauren Bonfe and junior Danielle Herrmann, co-captains of the 2007-08 University of Kansas swimming and diving team, were two of the six KU Academic All-Americans named by the College Swimming Coaches Association of America Tuesday for their performance in both the pool and classroom during the 2006-07 school year.

2006-07 senior co-captain Jenny Short joined Herrmann as a first-team selection, while sophomore Alicia Casillas, junior Maria Mayrovich and senior Terri Schramka joined Bonfe as Honorable Mention Academic All-American recipients.

Collaboratively, the team posted a 3.21 GPA during the 2006-07 academic year and was named an Academic All-American team in March for the third consecutive year.

All six Academic All-American honorees recorded stellar swims on the season, including four shattered Kansas records and a repeat NCAA appearance from Short (her first in 2005), while Herrmann recorded four broken KU records at the Big 12 Championships in College Station, Texas, and received her first NCAA bid to compete in Minneapolis, Minn., at the 2007 NCAA Championships.

Dedication to academics, in addition to athletics, is a primary focus for head coach Clark Campbell and the swimming and diving program at Kansas.

“As a program, we are very proud of our six athletes who earned Academic All-American honors,” Campbell said. “It is a tribute to the focused and diligent work they put in as student-athletes on a daily basis.”

In February 2007, 16 Kansas swimmers and divers were named to the Academic All-Big 12 team, posting 14 first team members who recorded GPAs of 3.2 and higher, and two second team members who achieved GPAs between 3.0 and 3.19. Bonfe, Herrmann, Schramka and Short received first team honors.

With the academic semester already under way, Kansas begins swimming and diving competition Oct. 19, 2007, when it heads to Ames, Iowa, for the Big 12 relays.
