KU Women's Golf In Sixth Place After First Day Of Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational

MANHATTAN, Kan. – Emily Powers and Jennifer Clark helped lead the Kansas women’s golf team to a sixth-place standing after the first day of the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational on Monday. The tournament is taking place at Colbert Hills in Manhattan, Kan.

Powers shot 80-78–158 to enter Tuesday’s final round in a tie for 13th place, while Clark shot the best round by a Jayhawk with an opening 77 Monday morning. She followed with an 84 in the afternoon and her 161 total is tied for 23rd.

Four Jayhawks broke par on the cool, very windy day as Meghna Bal and Grace Thiry chipped in with identical 79s in the afternoon round.

Tulsa leads the team standings at 611, followed closely by Arkansas at 613. Illinois State is third at 638, with host Kansas State at 642, Wichita State at 645 and Kansas sixth at 649 in the 13-team tournament.

The Jayhawks shot 324 in the morning and 325 in the afternoon.

In addition to Powers and Clark, Meghan Gockel is tied for 37th at 166, Thiry tied for 40th at 167 and Kaylnd Carson in 50th at 171. Bal and Audrey Yowell are playing as individuals and their scores do not count towards the team score. Bal is tied for 35th at 165, while Yowell is tied for 40th at 167.

The 54-hole tournament will conclude with the final round on Tuesday morning.
