Kansas on pace to defend crown at Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invite

MANHATTAN-Kan. – With a chance to defend its team title from last year, the University of Kansas women’s golf team set the pace in the first two rounds of the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational at Colbert Hills Golf Course in Manhattan, Kan., Monday. Sophomore Camilla Svensson fired a second-round score of 72 to vault the Jayhawks to the top of the leaderboard with a two-stroke advantage over border-rival Missouri. The Jayhawks completed the first day after firing consecutive rounds of 302 and 298, the lowest second-round score of the day, for a total score of 600.

Svensson highlighted her season debut with a tie for fourth place after carding a two-round score of 147. Sophomore Emily Powers also had an impressive start, finishing the day in a tie for 11th place. The Quincy, Ill., native fired a 73 in the second round to give her a score of 150 on the day. Kansas senior Annie Giangrosso is one shot behind Powers at 150 after rounds of 77 and 73.

KU sophomore Meghan Gockel is in 19th place after shooting consecutive rounds of 78 and 75. In her inaugural campaign as a Jayhawk, freshman Jennifer Clark carded a score of 157 (77-80) in the first two rounds of play. The Kansas City, Kan., native currently sits in a tie for 31st.

Meghna Bal and Grace Thiry round at the young Jayhawk squad, entering the tournament as individuals. The two freshmen share the tie for seventh place after carding five-over scores of 149 (74-75).

“The girls played real steady today and we had perfect weather conditions,” head coach Erin O’Neil said. Overall, I was very pleased. We are ready to head into the third round tomorrow.”

Big-12 rivals Texas State and Kansas State sit in a close tie for third, ending the first two rounds only three strokes behind runner-up Missouri with scores of 605.

Kansas will begin the final round Tuesday, looking to repeat last year’s performance when it claimed tournament honors at Alvamar Golf Club in Lawrence, Kan.
