Oct. 2, 2009

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Emily Powers will lead the Kansas women’s golf team into its third tournament of the fall season when the Jayhawks tee off at the Johnie Imes Invitational at Columbia, Mo. on Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5 and 6.

The tournament will take place at The Club at Old Hawthorne. The Jayhawks finished fifth out of 18 teams at this event a year ago. Powers tied for sixth in the individual race, while teammates Jennifer Clark and Meghna Bal tied for 14th. Grace Thiry tied for 39th and Kalynd Carson tied for 62nd.

Teams in the field include Missouri, Wisconsin, Tulsa, Kansas, Indiana, Mississippi, Arkansas-Little Rock, Illinois State, Bradley, Kansas State, Florida International, Redlands, Missouri State, Princeton, Iowa, Southern Illinois, Middle Tennessee and Missouri-Kansas City.

“The field at this tournament is a strong one, so we will need to pull from our past experience from playing on this course last year, as well as be mentally tough for each shot,” said Kansas Heac Coach Erin O’Neil. “If we remain positive and make solid course management decisions I think we will walk away with a good finish.”

O’Neil’s lineup this year includes Powers, Clark, Bal, Thiry and Meghan Gockel. Powers leads the team with a 74.00 scoring average with consecutive top-1o individual finishes in KU’s first two events.

Thiry (78.16), Gockel (78.50) and Clark (78.83) are next in average with Bal fifth on the team at 80.00 strokes per round.

This year Kansas placed third at the Chip-N Club in Lincoln, Neb. and sixth at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational at Manhattan, Kan. Powers was second at the Nebraska event and tied for seventh last week in Manhattan.
