Kansas Cross Country Set to Compete at the Cowboy Jamboree

LAWRENCE, Kan. – After a three-week break from competition, the Kansas cross country teams are back in action as the Jayhawks compete in the 72nd-annual OSU Cowboy Jamboree Saturday in Stillwater, Okla.
The Cowboy Jamboree is the third meet this season for KU. Both the men’s and women’s teams are coming off second-place performances Sept. 13 at the Missouri Cross Country Challenge. Each team was victorious in the season-opener, the Bob Timmons Classic at Rim Rock Farm on Aug. 30.
Lauren Bonds has established herself as a force to be reckoned with thus far this season. She took first place individually in each of the first two races, including a victorious performance at the Missouri Cross Country Challenge that earned her Big 12 Runner of the Week honors for competition the weekend of Sept. 13. Bonds was the first female in Kansas history to win the award. She will be looking for more success this weekend.
The junior from Hutchinson, Kan., and her teammates will face their toughest competition yet, as the women’s field includes Abilene Christian, Butler County CC, East Central, Harding, Indiana, Kansas State, Miami (Ohio), Missouri Southern State, Missouri State, Nebraska Wesleyan, Northern Arizona, host Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Oral Roberts, Saint Louis, Sam Houston State, Southwestern Oklahoma State, St. Edwards, Texas A&M-Commerce, TCU, Texas State, Texas Tech, Central Missouri, Kansas, Missouri-Kansas City, Texas-Arlington, Wayland Baptist and Wichita State.
Along with Bonds, the KU women’s team will consist of senior Megan James, juniors Alison Knoll, Cassi Sokol and Kellie Schneider, sophomores Amanda Miller, Claire Hall and Riley Wertenberger, along with freshmen Rebeka Stowe, Laura Nightengale, Amanda Akin, Devin Wiegers, Kara Windisch and Lindsay Schaefer.
The KU men’s team also features a Big 12 Runner of the Week from Sept. 13. True freshman Zach Zarda became the first men’s runner since Colby Wissel to take home the honor, and he will be back for more Saturday in Stillwater.
Joining Zarda will be a solid group featuring graduate senior Brock Ternes, juniors Bret Imgrund, Levi Huseman and Isaiah Shirlen, sophomores Nick Caprario and Dan Van Orsdel, and freshmen Austin Bussing, Sam Bird , Kaleb Humphreys, Don Wasinger and Clay Schneider.
The men’s field will be equally competitive, as the Jayhawks face off against Abilene Christian, Butler County CC, East Central, Harding, Indiana, Kansas State, Missouri Southern State, Nebraska Wesleyan, New Mexico Highlands, Northern Arizona, Northwood, Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Oral Roberts, Saint Louis, Sam Houston State, Texas A&M-Commerce, TCU, Texas Tech, Central Missouri, Kansas, Missouri-Kansas City, Texas-Arlington, Wayland Baptist, Wichita State.
Action at the OSU Cross Country Course is set to begin with the women’s race and 9:10 a.m. CDT, and end with the men’s race at 9:45 a.m. CDT.
