Berry Named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week

Oct. 4, 2011

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Kansas junior soccer player Whitney Berry has been honored by the Big 12 Conference as the midfielder was named Offensive Player of the Week for contests played Sept. 26-Oct. 2 it was announced Tuesday. It is the fourth weekly conference honor by a Jayhawk this season and first of Berry’s career.

Last Friday, Berry was instrumental in KU’s 3-2 double-overtime win versus Texas. The Wichita, Kan., native tallied the assist on three goals to help the Jayhawks notch their third win over the Longhorns in program history. Berry’s three helpers also brought her nation-leading total up to 11 so far this season, one shy of the KU single-season record. Her 23 career assists rank third all-time at Kansas.

Berry becomes the third Jayhawk recognized by the Big 12 this season. Freshman Jamie Fletcher was named the conference newcomer of the week on Aug. 23, while fellow freshman Ingrid Vidal earned newcomer honors in consecutive weeks on Aug. 30 and Sept. 6.

Kansas returns to the pitch this weekend for a pair of contests. The Jayhawks wrap up a four-match homestand versus Baylor on Friday, Oct. 7 at 4 p.m. KU will then travel to Creighton for a non-conference game on Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m.
