Svistun, who finished last season with a team-high 25 singles wins, will go for her third career tournament title on Saturday, as she won her bracket at both the Deacon Classic and Kitty Harrison Invitational last fall.

The Ufa, Russia native rolled over two opponents on Friday to reach the championship match. First was a contest with Illinois’ Annie McCarthy in which Svistun won, 6-0, 6-3. The junior then handled Western Michigan’s Yumi Mastuto, 6-1, 6-2, to move into the final.

However, Svistun was the only KU player to record a win on Friday, as sophomore Kunigunda Dorn, freshman Maria Martinez and freshman Mymee Tokuda each went 0-2 in singles play.

Day two of the event will feature the championship matches of each singles bracket — including Svistun’s match with IllinoisState’s Fadazi Masiyazi — as well as first and second round play in the doubles draw, where Dorn and Martinez will compete together.
