Jayhawks Tabbed Sixth In Preseason Big 12 Women's Basketball Poll

Oct. 7, 2010

IRVING, Texas –

Kansas was tabbed to finish sixth place in the 2010-11 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Preseason Poll, in a vote of the league’s head coaches. The Jayhawks return three starters and seven letterwinners from last year’s 17-16 team.

Kansas will start the season with returning starters sophomores Carolyn Davis and Angel Goodrich and junior Aishah Sutherland, while sophomore Monica Engelman and senior Krysten Boogaard return as part-time starters a season ago.

Davis, who led the Big 12 in field goal percentage last season at 71.9 percent, turned in 10.2 points and 5.6 boards on her way to Freshman All-America honors in 2010. Sutherland recorded 9.3 points and a team-leading 7.1 rebounds per game, while Goodrich was adding 6.8 points and 7.1 assists per game prior to suffering a season-ending knee injury in early January.

Baylor was selected as the preseason favorite for the second consecutive year and third time in Conference history. The Lady Bears received all of the possible 11 first-place votes (coaches cannot vote for their own team).

Texas A&M, winner of the 2010 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship, was picked second and nabbed the other first-place vote. Oklahoma was chosen third followed by Texas in fourth, Iowa State in fifth and the Jayhawks sixth. Nebraska, last year’s regular season champion, was selected seventh, followed by Oklahoma State in eighth, Kansas State listed ninth, Texas Tech in 10th, Missouri 11th and Colorado 12th.

Seven Big 12 squads competed in the 2010 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship with Baylor and Oklahoma advancing to the Women’s Final Four. The Conference brings back 13-of-30 leading scorers and 12-of-20 top rebounders in 2010-11. The regular season will get underway on Friday, Nov. 12, with Kansas set to tip-off the 2010-11 season on Sunday, Nov. 14 when it hosts South Dakota.

Head coaches and select student-athletes will convene in Kansas City on Oct. 20 for the annual Big 12 Women’s Basketball Media Day. Kansas City’s Municipal Auditorium will serve as the site of the 2011 Phillips 66 Big 12 Women’s Basketball Championship March 8-9 & 11-12.
