Swimming and Diving Kicks Off 2004-05 Season

Oct. 8, 2004

Lawrence, Kan. – The University of Kansas swimming and diving team hosted its annual Crimson and Blue intrasquad meet Friday, Oct. 8, at the Robinson Natatorium. Team scores were not recorded at the 10-event meet.

Freshman Anne Liggett, who swam in her first collegiate competition, won the 100 and 200 freestyle events for the Crimson team. The Portland, Ore., native recorded times of 59.03 in the 100 and 2:10.01 in the 200. Sophomore Hannah Bakke, also of the Crimson team, won the 100 breaststroke event with a time of 1:13.51. In the 100 butterfly event, junior Lindsey Urbatchka finished with a time of 1:04.41 for a first place finish. Junior Gina Gnatzig won the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:24.22, as a member of the Crimson team.

“I thought the intrasquad meet was a great way for us to start the season,” head coach Clark Campbell said. “Our team showed good things from start to finish in the meet tonight.”

For the Blue team, senior co-captain Amy Gruber won the 50 freestyle with a time of 26.77. The Bigelow, Ark., native was also a member of the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams. Two freshmen, Lindsay Herre and Terri Schramka, competed in their first collegiate competition and won races at the intrasquad meet. Herre, an Overland Park, Kan., native, won the 400 freestyle with a time of 4:31.35. Schramka, a Madison, Wis., native, won the 100 backstroke and was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay team.

“Our freshmen competed very well in their first-ever collegiate competition,” Campbell said. “The seniors helped the freshmen get acclimated to the college swimming environment tonight. Their help showed by how well the freshmen competed.”

The Jayhawks will next be in action when they host Texas in a Big 12 dual meet at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 14. Kansas will then host the Big 12 Relays on Oct. 15, followed by a home dual against Texas A&M at 10 a.m. on Oct. 16 in Robinson Natatorium.
