Bal Paces Kansas Women's Golf In New Mexico

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Kansas junior Meghna Bal put together the best tournament of her career as she tied for sixth individually to lead the Kansas women’s golf team to a tie for seventh in the team standings of the Price’s Give Em Five Intercollegiate Wednesday.

Bal opened the tournament with a one-under par 71 on Monday and followed that with consecutive rounds of 74 for a three-round total of 219. Bal’s previous best tournament finish was a tie for seventh at the Susie Maxwell Berning Classic in 2008.

Teammate Emily Powers broke 70 for the third time in her career with a final-round 69. She tied for 23rd with a 224 total after shooting 81-74 the first two days.

Gracey Thiry tied for 30th at 225 with a final-day 76, while Jennifer Clark tied for 55th at 232 and Meghan Gockel finished 90th at 246.

The Jayhawks improved their standing each day of the tournament and shot 297 in both the second and third rounds after opening with a 306.

Idaho won the event at 871 with UC-Irvine second at 878. Kansas tied Kansas State at 900.

Kansas will close out the fall campaign when it competes in the Edwin Watts/Palmetto Intercollegiate at Kiawah Island, S.C. on Oct. 26-27.
